Character AI pricing: free vs c.ai+ in 2026
Last reviewed: 12 July 2026
Here is the whole pricing story in one breath: Character AI is free with ads, and the single paid plan, c.ai+, costs $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year. The rest of this page is about what those two options feel like to live with.
There is no third tier. No business plan, no enterprise seats, no developer API you can pay for. Character AI makes almost all of its money converting heavy free users into $9.99 subscribers. That one fact explains a lot about why the free experience keeps getting tighter.

What the free plan gives you, and what it took away
Unlimited text chat with any of the ten-million-plus characters is still free, and that is the reason most people never pay. You can build your own character, hold long conversations and try voice, all without a card on file. For a lot of users that is plenty.
The catch is everything wrapped around it. Since February 2026 free accounts see full-screen ads dropped into the middle of chats, fully rolled out by mid-April. In March the platform started charging its Charms currency for swipes, the regenerations you use to nudge a reply in a better direction, which had been free since launch. Add slower responses when the servers are busy, and the free tier in 2026 is noticeably more grating than the one people fell for a couple of years ago.
What c.ai+ unlocks
The trade is simple: c.ai+ buys comfort, not capability. The model underneath is identical to the free tier, so replies come faster, never sharper. What $9.99 removes is friction: no ads, no peak-hour queue, faster responses, unlimited swipes, unlimited voice calls, and steadier memory. Subscribers also get early access to new features and the Imagine Gallery image generation that arrived in 2026.
Monthly or annual, and the fine print
The annual plan lands at $94.99, roughly $7.92 a month, so committing for a year saves about a fifth over paying monthly. Two things to know before you do. Annual plans auto-renew every year until you cancel, and Character AI does not give refunds on web purchases. Buy twelve months, change your mind in week three, and that money is gone. If you are unsure, start monthly and switch to annual once you know you will stay.
So is it worth paying for?
If you open Character AI most days and the ads have started to sting, then yes: $9.99 buys back the experience the free tier used to be, and the annual price is fair. If you drop in a couple of times a week for a bit of roleplay, the free plan is annoying but perfectly survivable, and the upgrade will sit half-used. There is no middle-ground plan to soften that decision, which is part of why the jump feels bigger than it should.
One more thing to weigh: c.ai+ does nothing about the content filter. If the reason you are eyeing a paid plan is a less restrictive chat, spending here will not get you there. Our full Character AI review covers that limit, and the alternatives page lists platforms that price things differently. If it is the platform’s rules rather than the price giving you pause, our safety page covers the age limits and privacy, and newcomers can start with the setup guide.
Prices are checked against the in-app subscription screen and were current at the last review date above; Character AI can change them without notice. How we test is set out in our Testing Methodology.
